Long Island - Hofstra lacrosse club history - 1999
The Long Island lacrosse club was founded in 1957 by Owen Walsh, Bill Donnelly and the late Fran McCall, and became a charter member of the United States Club Lacrosse Association. At that time club lacrosse was dominated by the Mount Washington club of Baltimore and, to a lesser extent, the University club, also of Baltimore. The USCLA in those days consisted of the above 3 clubs plus the Boston, Connecticut Valley, Mohawk (Albany), New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Maryland, Washington (DC), and Suffolk County lacrosse clubs.
The Long Island club was competitive thru 1965, but had never beaten Mount Washington or the University club. In 1966 Richie Moran became the Long Island coach and, by the time he left to take the Cornell University coaching job after the 1968 season, Long Island had reached the top of the USCLA, winning the championship in 1968. This was the first club championship won by a northern team, or more specifically, by a team that was not based in the Baltimore area.
In 1969, 2 years ahead of the NCAA, the USCLA instituted a playoff system with the best southern team meeting the best northern team for the championship. The first championship game was at Hofstra with Long Island defeating the Maryland lacrosse club. By the mid-70's the USCLA had grown to over 20 teams with new clubs in Boston, Connecticut, upstate New York, Long Island, Westchester, Maryland and Virginia. The team is currently called the Long Island-Hofstra lacrosse club because of its home field affiliation, but previously it was known as the Long Island Athletic club until that organization went defunct. Of the 30 USCLA championship games to date, the Long Island club team has appeared in 25 (winning 16). It is still the only non-Baltimore club to win this title.
The Long Island coaches since Richie Moran have been: Cliff Murray, Bill Ritch, Jack Kaley, Tom Flatley, Tom Postel, Stan Kowalski, Bill Beroza and Ed Hughes. Most of our success has obviously been due to the large number of talented and dedicated players we have had. At least 17 Long Island alumni have been inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame (including Ritch, Postel, Kowalski and Beroza). Also, 45 Long Island players and 4 coaches have been selected for team USA.
Currently, the Long Island - Hofstra club competes in the USCLA metro division along with the New York A. C., North Hempstead and Duke-Oyster Bay lacrosse clubs. We constitute a tight geographic unit, and currently play each other twice a year (home and home), and the Yankee Division teams once.
